Frequently Asked Questions - Disability Tax Credit
What is a Health Impairment Refund (HIR)? |
It is firstly a refund from the government for Canadians with a health impairment or disability and secondly, an amount that an individual can claim as a credit to reduce their taxes. In both cases, the impairment first has to be certified by a qualified medical practitioner in order for the individual to get an approved certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). While the CRA calls this a Disability Tax Credit (DTC) as an umbrella term covering impairments and activity limitations, we are calling it a Heath Impairment Refund (HIR), mainly to avoid the negative connotations associated with the word "disability". |
